General Disclaimer

The information and tools provided by PlateAndFilm (“https://www.ambrotos.com”) are for general educational purposes only. This Site Documents History — It Is Not a Chemical How-To

PlateAndFilm covers the history, aesthetics, identification, and physics of historical photographic processes — the daguerreotype, ambrotype, tintype, and wet-plate collodion — and provides calculators for exposure, dating, and archiving. It does not, and will not, publish a working recipe, formula, quantity, or step-by-step procedure for mixing collodion, silver baths, fixers, or any other photographic chemistry. Wet-plate collodion involves genuinely hazardous materials, including flammable solvents and corrosive and toxic compounds, and some historical fixing agents used in the 19th century (such as potassium cyanide) are lethal and are not used by anyone today; nothing on this site describes how to use them. Anyone genuinely interested in practicing wet-plate photography should learn it hands-on from an experienced instructor, with proper ventilation, protective equipment, and a plan for disposing of chemical waste safely — silver-laden and heavy-metal solutions must never be poured down an ordinary drain. If you have a medical concern related to a chemical exposure, seek medical care; this site does not and cannot provide medical advice.

Any use of the information or tools is entirely at your own risk. It is your responsibility to ensure the results meet your specific requirements and to verify them before acting.

A Reference Aid, Not Chemical-Safety, Conservation, or Appraisal Advice

PlateAndFilm’s calculators — the reciprocity & exposure calculator, the ISO↔EV converter, the print DPI & size calculator, the dilution and collodion ratio calculators, and the photo process identifier — are designed to help you understand historical photographic processes and check your working. The dilution and collodion ratio calculators perform arithmetic on ratios you already have from a manufacturer label or a historical or archival source; they do not tell you what chemicals to use, where to source them, or how to handle them safely, and they are not a substitute for a proper safety data sheet or hands-on training. Historical photographic chemistry can involve materials that are flammable, toxic, or otherwise hazardous. This site does not constitute professional conservation, chemical-safety, or appraisal advice, and does not authenticate, date, or value any specific object. For hands-on process work, consult current safety data sheets and a qualified instructor; for valuation or authentication, consult a professional appraiser or conservator.

Results Are Rounded Estimates

The tools apply standard formulas and simple ratio arithmetic, and round their output for readability. That rounding, together with the assumptions of a deliberately simple model, means a displayed value may differ slightly from a full-precision calculation. Always work to full precision when a project requires it.

Why a Result May Look Off

A calculator can return a surprising or blank answer when:
