How to Identify a Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, or Tintype
Open an old family case and you'll usually find one of three things: a daguerreotype, an ambrotype, or a tintype. All three were sold in similar hinged cases with velvet linings and brass mats, and all three produce a single, one-of-a-kind positive image rather than a print made from a negative. That family resemblance is exactly why they get confused — but each process used a completely different support material, and that difference is the fastest way to tell them apart.
Start with the support material
The daguerreotype, introduced in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, is exposed directly onto a sheet of copper plated with a thin layer of polished silver. The ambrotype, popular from the mid-1850s, is a glass plate. The tintype (properly called a ferrotype), which arrived in 1856 and stayed in use into the early 20th century, is a thin sheet of iron coated in dark lacquer or enamel. Copper, glass, and iron feel and behave differently, and that's the first branch in the identification key.
The mirror test: daguerreotype
A daguerreotype's silvered surface is genuinely reflective, almost mirror-like. Tilt the plate under a light and the image will flip between a positive and a ghostly negative depending on the angle and what's reflected behind it — a dark coat will look light, a light background will look dark. No other common 19th-century process does this, because no other process has a literal polished-metal surface underneath the image. If you're holding something that behaves like a mirror with a picture floating on it, you're almost certainly holding a daguerreotype.
The backlight test: ambrotype
An ambrotype is, physically, an underexposed glass negative. On its own it would look like a pale, washed-out image. What makes it read as a positive is a layer of black paint, varnish, or velvet placed directly behind the glass, which turns the thin, light image areas dark by contrast. Hold an ambrotype up to a strong light and, if you can see through or around the backing, the image will look like a faint negative. Ambrotypes were sold roughly from 1854 to the mid-1860s, overlapping with the tail end of the daguerreotype era and the rise of the tintype.
The magnet test: tintype
Because a tintype's support is iron, not tin (the name is a historical misnomer), a small magnet will visibly attract it. This is the single most reliable and least invasive test available: no daguerreotype or ambrotype will respond to a magnet, since copper and glass are both non-magnetic. Tintypes are also noticeably lighter and thinner than a cased daguerreotype, and their surface is matte and dark rather than mirror-bright, which is often enough on its own once you've handled a few examples.
Weight, case, and mat clues
Beyond the core three tests, a few secondary clues help confirm a judgment. Daguerreotypes and ambrotypes were almost always sold under glass with a decorative brass mat and preserver frame, because their surfaces (bare silver, or bare emulsion on the back of the glass) needed physical protection. Tintypes needed no such protection and were frequently sold uncased, simply trimmed to a standard size, or slipped into a paper sleeve or a lightweight paper mat — though higher-end tintypes were cased just like their predecessors, so case presence alone isn't decisive. A cased image that feels heavy for its size is more likely a daguerreotype or ambrotype; a thin, light, uncased sheet is very likely a tintype.
When more than one test agrees
In practice, identification gets much more confident when two clues line up. A plate that's non-magnetic, mirror-reflective, and flips between positive and negative as you tilt it is a daguerreotype on every count. A plate that's non-magnetic, on glass, and shows a faint negative when backlit is an ambrotype. A plate that's magnetic and has a dark, matte, non-reflective surface is a tintype. Photographs that fail to fit cleanly — a heavily deteriorated tintype with a shiny corrosion layer, for instance — are exactly the cases worth a second, more careful look, ideally with a loupe and good raking light.
Beyond the three
Once photography moved to paper prints mounted on card — the carte de visite and later the cabinet card — a different identification method takes over, based mostly on the size and style of the card mount rather than the surface itself. That's a large enough topic to deserve its own guide.
