From Silver Plates to Celluloid: A Timeline of Early Photographic Film
It's easy to think of "old photography" as a single era, but the path from Daguerre's silvered copper plate to a roll of flexible celluloid film loaded into a simple box camera took roughly fifty years, with several genuinely distinct technologies overlapping and displacing one another along the way. Tracing that timeline helps make sense of why a family's photo collection might jump from a heavy cased daguerreotype to a small brown-toned snapshot within a couple of generations.
1839: the daguerreotype
Louis Daguerre's process, made public by the French government in 1839, produced a single unrepeatable positive image directly on a silvered copper plate sensitized with iodine vapor, exposed in the camera, and developed with mercury vapor. It was the first commercially practical photographic process and dominated the 1840s and 1850s, prized for its extraordinary fine detail but limited by long exposure times and a plate that had to be viewed at exactly the right angle to see the image clearly.
1851: wet-plate collodion, and two positive spin-offs
Frederick Scott Archer's wet-plate collodion process, published in 1851, was dramatically more light-sensitive and far cheaper to practice, and it quickly displaced the daguerreotype. Used as a negative, it enabled unlimited paper prints from a single sitting. Deliberately underexposed and backed in black, the same process produced the ambrotype on glass (from about 1854) and, from 1856, the tintype on thin iron — both direct positives that needed no printing at all.
1854–1866: the card-mounted portrait era
As collodion negatives made paper printing practical and cheap, studios shifted toward paper prints mounted on card: the carte de visite from 1859 and the larger cabinet card from 1866. This period is when photography truly became a mass consumer product, with families collecting and trading small portrait cards in dedicated albums.
1871: the gelatin dry plate
Richard Leach Maddox's 1871 gelatin dry-plate process finally freed photographers from the wet-plate's ten-minute working window. A gelatin emulsion coated onto glass could be manufactured in advance, stored, sold, and exposed whenever convenient, then developed later — the plate no longer had to be prepared on the spot. Dry plates were commercially refined through the 1870s and became the dominant professional format by the 1880s.
1888–1889: roll film and the Kodak camera
George Eastman's Kodak company introduced a flexible, transparent roll film base and, in 1888, a simple box camera pre-loaded with enough film for 100 exposures, sold under the slogan "You press the button, we do the rest." In 1889, Eastman's factory began producing film on a nitrocellulose (celluloid) base rather than the earlier paper backing, giving photographers a genuinely flexible, transparent film stock that could be wound through a camera and processed as a continuous roll. This is the moment photography opened up to ordinary amateurs rather than remaining the domain of professional studios and dedicated hobbyists with a portable darkroom.
1900: the Brownie and mass-market snapshot photography
Kodak's Brownie camera, introduced in 1900 at a price of one dollar, made photography genuinely affordable for the first time, and the snapshot — casual, amateur, often slightly imperfect — became a new visual category distinct from the formal studio portrait that had dominated the previous half-century.
1907 and 1925: color and 35mm
The Lumière brothers' Autochrome process, launched commercially in 1907, brought a practical (if slow and expensive) color photography option using a screen of dyed potato-starch grains. In 1925, the Leica camera popularized the 35mm film format — originally a motion-picture film stock — in a small, portable still camera body, setting the template that dominated amateur and professional photography for most of the rest of the 20th century.
Why the overlaps matter for identification
Because each new process took years to fully displace the last, it's entirely normal to find a family collection spanning tintypes, cabinet cards, and early roll-film snapshots within a single generation, especially in households that had photographs made across several decades. Recognizing which technology produced a given image is often the fastest way to bracket roughly when it was made.
