The Wet-Plate Collodion Process: A Historical Overview
For roughly twenty years in the middle of the 19th century, almost every photograph made anywhere in the world started the same way: with a glass or metal plate freshly coated in a syrupy solution called collodion, sensitized, exposed, and developed while still wet. The wet-plate collodion process, published by the British sculptor and photographer Frederick Scott Archer in 1851, displaced the daguerreotype almost overnight and remained the standard until dry plates finally offered a practical alternative in the 1870s and 1880s.
What collodion actually is
Collodion is a solution of nitrocellulose (sometimes called guncotton, itself made by treating cotton fibers with nitric and sulfuric acid) dissolved in a mixture of ether and alcohol. On its own it's simply a film-forming liquid used in medicine and elsewhere long before photography adopted it; poured onto a clean plate, the ether and alcohol evaporate quickly, leaving behind a thin, even, transparent skin that adheres tightly to the surface. Photographers added potassium iodide and other soluble halide salts to the collodion before pouring it, which set up the layer to become light-sensitive once bathed in a silver nitrate solution.
Why it had to be used wet
The process gets its name from an unforgiving practical constraint: the collodion layer had to be exposed and developed before it dried out, typically within about ten to fifteen minutes of being coated. Once dry, the layer became far less permeable to the developing chemistry and, more importantly, far less sensitive to light. That single limitation shaped everything about how the process was practiced — photographers working outside a studio had to bring a complete darkroom with them, commonly a light-tight tent or a specially built wagon, so a plate could be coated, exposed, and developed all within a few steps of the camera.
From negative to two positive processes
Archer's original process produced a glass negative, from which any number of paper prints could be made — a major advance over the daguerreotype's unrepeatable single image. But photographers quickly noticed that a collodion negative, deliberately underexposed and viewed against a dark background, looked like a positive image rather than a negative. Backed with black paint, varnish, or velvet, that same glass plate became the ambrotype: a direct-view positive that needed no printing at all. Not long after, the same underexposed-collodion trick was applied to a thin sheet of lacquered iron instead of glass, producing the tintype (ferrotype) — cheaper, lighter, and far more durable for a sitter to carry away the same day.
Why it displaced the daguerreotype so fast
Collodion plates were dramatically more light-sensitive than daguerreotype plates, cutting exposure times from tens of seconds down to a few seconds in good light, which made a real difference for portrait sitters who no longer needed a head brace to hold still. The process was also considerably cheaper to practice at scale — glass and iron plates cost far less than silvered copper — and, in the negative form, it allowed unlimited paper copies of a single sitting, opening up an entirely new market for cheap, mass-producible portraits like the carte de visite.
The itinerant photographer's tent
Because the whole process depended on coating, exposing, and developing a plate within minutes, traveling and field photographers of the era — including many who documented the American Civil War — worked out of portable darkroom tents or specially outfitted wagons stocked with chemistry, plates, and a water supply. The physical demands of the process are a large part of why so much surviving mid-19th-century photography was made in or near a fixed studio, where a proper darkroom was always close at hand.
The end of the wet-plate era
The wet-plate process finally gave way once gelatin dry plates, patented by Richard Leach Maddox in 1871 and steadily improved through the decade, offered comparable sensitivity without the need to develop a plate on the spot. By the 1880s, dry plates and eventually roll film had taken over the mainstream market, though wet-plate collodion never fully disappeared and remains practiced today by historical-process photographers and conservators working to understand and preserve 19th-century images.
